Junior Showmanship Classes & Information

Junior Showmanship.
Junior Showmanship classes shall be offered by all UKC-licensed clubs offering conformation classes with the
exception of specialty clubs holding events in conjunction with Premier. Clubs licensed to offer UKC conformation
shows shall follow UKC Junior Showmanship Rules. The purpose of Junior Showmanship classes is to evaluate each
Junior Handler's ability to present his/her dog for conformation judging, his/her general dog knowledge, and his/her
specific knowledge of the dog and breed of dog he/she is presenting. Offering Junior Showmanship will be mandatory.
A. Classes.
Classes are divided by the age and experience of the Junior Handler and not by the breed of dog. The Junior and
Senior classes only shall be subdivided into Novice and Open divisions. The Novice division is for true beginners in
the sport.
No Junior Member who has competed in the Open Junior class may subsequently compete in the Novice Senior Class.
(1) Pee-Wee. This class is for children two years and under four years of age as of the date of the event. Parents are
allowed to assist children in the ring to ensure that dogs are under control at all times. No placements will be made in
this class. Clubs must offer an award or ribbon to each participant. Results of this class will be published in the official
Event Results in BLOODLINES magazine.
(2) Sub-Junior. This class is for children four years and under eight years of age as of the date of the event. Parents are
allowed to assist children in the ring to ensure that dogs are under control at all times. No placements will be made in
this class. Clubs must offer an award or ribbon to each participant. Results of this class will be published in the official
Event Results in BLOODLINES magazine.
(3) Junior. This class is for children eight years and under 13 years of age as of the date of the event. The Judge shall
give up to four placements, where possible, in each division of this class. This class shall be subdivided into two
divisions as follows:
(a) Novice Junior. This class is for any Junior member who has not earned three first place wins from the Novice
Junior class.
(b) Open Junior. This class is for any Junior member who has earned three first place wins from the Novice Junior
class.
(4) Senior. This class is for children 13 years and under 18 years of age as of the date of the event. Any Junior who
turns 18 years old after January 1st may continue to compete for the rest of that calendar year. The Judge shall give up
to four placements, where possible, in each division of this class. This class shall be subdivided into two divisions as
follows:
(a) Novice Senior. This class is for any Senior member who has not earned three first place wins from the Novice
Junior class.
(b) Open Senior. This class is for any Senior member who has earned three first place wins from the Novice Senior
class.
(5) Best Junior Handler. This class shall consist of the winners of the Novice Junior, Open Junior, Novice Senior and
Open Senior classes. The Judge shall select a single winner in this class.
