The United Belgian Shepherd Dog Association

WHAT IS THE UBSDA
Back to the UBSDA Home page
The UBSDA is the parent club for Belgian Shepherd Dogs affiliated with the United Kennel Club (UKC).
The UKC was established in 1898 as a registry for purebred dogs, dedicated to the "total dog" concept.
UKC clubs offer obedience and agility trials, conformation shows, and other events for the 145 plus
breeds it registers. The UKC accepted registration of Belgian Shepherd Dogs in March of 1991 for their
full program, including conformation shows, in conjunction with the birth of UBSDA. Prior to that time
BSDs were eligible for competition in obedience trials only.
The founders of the UBSDA embraced the UKC's decision to register the BSD as one breed with four
varieties here in the United States as they are world-wide. UKC's standard for the Belgian Shepherd Dog
is based upon the FCI (Federation Cynologique Internationale) standard. UBSDA also heartily approves
of the UKC position supporting the sport of working dog training (Ring and Schutzhund) and its
"total dog" concept. The United Kennel Club is also applauded for its active role in combating puppy
mills and anti-dog legislation.
UBSDA's membership has grown steadily since its inception in 1991. Members represent all four
varieties from all parts of the United States and beyond. UKC shows offering conformation classes for
BSDs are being scheduled with increasing frequency. One advantage to exhibiting at UKC shows is that
only knowledgeable, experienced breeder-judges are licensed to judge BSDs in conformation.
Our shows are just a little bit different from what you may be used to. The pace is relaxed, and exhibitor
